How Much time do you realistically have to garden?Don't let that question scare you! Depending on what you decide to do, a garden can take as little as an hour to get planted and just a few minutes a day to maintain. A good idea is to start very small the first season you decide to start gardening and then add a little each year as your skill and confidence grow. Check out my other blog articles for specifics on planning and growing each option.
Very Easy:
* Container gardening or micro-garden plot
* Consider buying pots of already established plants
* Low-maintenance plants that don't need a lot pruning, fussing or frequent harvesting
* Position plants as close to water source as reasonable
* Consider an indoor-only houseplant garden or pots of herbs in a sunny window
* Create a little fairy garden with only a handful of plants
A Little More Time:
* Bigger or more containers
* Smallish plot of land (probably not bigger than 5 x 5)
* Plants that require some pruning, deadheading (pulling dead flowers off), or trellising
A Few Hours Per Week:
* Raised beds
* Large deck boxes
* Medium-sized plot of land (bigger than 5' x 5', but don't let it get too huge)
* Just about any plants you would want to grow
* Use water and time-saving techniques like mulches, ground covers and watering systems
Once you get the hang of it, it'll be more fun than work! The key is keeping it small and focusing on what you most want to grow.
